X5 with Garmin 7500 GPS show&tell

I built this mount for my Garmin 7500. I used part from Home Depot
and Dremmel tool in my garage. It is operational without the "dead Reckoning feature". I have the external GPS attenna mount outside the vehicle. The mount attachs to the inside of the glove compartment.
The attachment is made of metal strip 1.2cm in thickness to clear the spacing out of the glove compartment.
The original metal is white as you can see a little bit when I open the glove box.
I will fix it with black electrical tape (like the less of the mount). I couldn't find any black anodized metal strip around.
Otherwise it would have look much better. But of course, I can build another mount now that I have a sample.

Nice

Looks Sweet! I was actually considering buying that unit for some time now... how do you like it? Are the nav instructions clear and easy to understand/hear?

Why didn't you put it in the center of the dash on top? Is the screen to big to fit?

Please let me know, nice job by the way, I'm very impressed!

This hurts the luxurious interior look on your X. Man, looks awful. Go OEM or buy a small portable handheld GPS. Look at all the mess underneath your dash, and inside your glove compartment. I wouldn't do this to my X.

Thank you.
I try different placement already. Over the dash would be kind of big and obstruct the front view. I also don't want it overheat with more direct sunlight. The dash attachment would be fine for a smaller type GPS.
I also try mounting it at next to the a/c control but I feel you have to look
down and may be right at the knee of the passenger. If you can see, the mount is two pieces. Without the 2nd piece going up is where I had it mount originally - necx to the a/c control.
I didn't try flip it down so it would be right next to the ashtray /control..
well that is too low and require you to look further down away from the road.
ABout the 7500, it is very easy to use. I like the touch screen, fast access, fast update of the map, no problem to view in sun light, and fast recalculate in navigate mode.
You can connect a laptop (USB) to up/down load POI, logs, track, and trip data.
I haven't play with the SD Card much but I did try upload MP3 files and play it back (but I don't think I will use it as a MP3 player).
The video input is the next thing I will get to. As I am getting Vizualogic headrest DVD, so may be I will connect to this 7500 as well. Of course I won't drive and watch a movie at the same time - it would be dangerous if you know what i mean.

I know it doesn't look OEM ...yet. Sorry.
Well I will work on it. This took me 1 hour and $3 for the metal.
I think if I get a real machine shop to work on this, it would
come out better - may be with a swivel arm so the GPS can fold right back into the glove box or hidden under the passenger feet.
When you need it you can bring it anywhere close to your liking at any angle. May be I can sell it...what do you think?
This is just to show that you can get a 7" GPS after market in the front.
The wire underneath show that there is quick, easy power to tap to.
Next I would tap to a different power in the glove box so that it will shutdown the GPS when the key is not in the ignition.

And also with this attachment, there is no intrusive modified to the vehicle. I can remove it in 10 seconds, and you don't even know that there was anything attach to the glove box...Good as new!

I like what you did with what you had! My nav is super small and it is hard enogh to position it just so. Right now its next to the gear shift. So I like how you could mount this one, still see it easily, and yet not cut into much of the passenger space.

What about the passenger airbag? Will this location get in the way?

NICE !, I have a Nuvi 350 that I love and that has prompted me to get a new mount. BTW if anyone is looking for a great place to pick up car mounts check out https://www.mountguys.com/ First rate stuff. I got the floor mount for the nuvi, no drilling and flexible.

Very ingenious! It should look very nice once you get around to tidying up the wires and such.

Good question. What are the chances that the airbag will launch the GPS unit and cause injury?
