Talking 4.6is - Why Is It Not Designated An "M"?

The 4.6is is certainly the high performance version of the X5. It has superior brakes, suspension and horsepower as well as all of the options. Why did BMW decide not to call the 4.6is the M version?

I had heard it was due to the fact the X5 is not a car and they would not designate a SAV as an M. True or wives tale?

If BMW had wanted to designate the 4.6is as an M version what would it have been? The M X5? I think Mazda already has a claim on that one! The MX??

What do you guys think????

because it's not an M car and the very nature of an m car is that it is a car

answer I was told

I asked this of BMW service manager, he said because that would make it an "MX5" and that would cause trademark issue with Mazda-mx 5.
Don't know if it's true but guess it's plausible.

I'm sure they could have called it something else if they wanted to. Back when they made the "M" Z3, they didn't call it the MZ3, but instead the M Roadster. They could call this one the M-SAV if they wanted to.

hopefully we'll hear more soon on whether they'll be an ///M version of the X5. If so, I think it'll be called X5 M just like the Z4M

Yeah...how come they don't come in a manual? My 3.0 comes in a manual but not the 4.8is....it doesn't make sense.

there was a "batch" of early e36 M3s for US market only that came with auto tranny, so the lack of manual is not an issue here, I guess
