My light sensor required me to replace my windshield
I know it sounds strange. I bought my X used and wanted the auto-lock feature turned on. After getting the X back from the dealer my headlights starting coming on around 3 or 4 pm. Normally they don't come on until dusk. I took it back and they said the sensitivity was too high. They made it less sensitive and then the lights came on around 5:30 pm. Which is still way to early in AZ as the sun is still high in the sky. I mean I wear sun glasses at 5:30 pm this time of year! Well two dealers looked at it and both confirmed that the sensor and the computer were working correctly. I kept arguing with the dealer that set the door locks that it worked fine until they reset the computer. Well they brought out the service manager and he made sure I had a BMW windshield, which I did. He then decided to do something that floored me, he suggested we replace the windshield.
I thought he was joking. He was not. He said it appears that the laminate is separting from the inner and outer parts of the windshield. He explained that laminate keeps the windshield from shattering on impact. Well I decided I have nothing to lose as the X is still under warranty. I got the X back around 6 pm. Perfect time to test it and....the lights did not come on, good! They did not come on until the sun was getting close to the horizon, almost perfect. I am even considering having them make it more sensitive so that it comes on earlier.
The lesson that I learned here is that if I ever need to get my windshield replaced then I need to stick with BMW. I also wonder if the wrong windshield can affect the rain sensing feature.
