The other point certainly in the UK is value for money - depreciation is lower than virtually anything else. My first X5 (3.0i Topaz Blue, Manual on Sports Suspension) - I traded in and got 73% of what I paid for it, after three years and 42,000 miles - don't know of anything that comes close to that! |

It's all in the above posts: it drives great, great sounding engine, very comfortable interior, no maint for early years, excellent handling for 4K lbs especially at speed. On the open road, the vehicle is hard to keep under 100mph...very long legs...
Call it Two Tons o' Fun '03 4.4i, Jet Black, Light Poplar wood, Sand Beige leather, premium package, Xenons, PDC, Chrome wheels, grille guard. 18K miles after 18 mos. No problems, none. |

I drove (almost) every SUV on the market in comparison... my thoughts...
Land Cruiser - Unbelievable reputation but $75K for off road capability I would use 1 week a year. Sequoia, Armada, QX - An uglier, top heavy, bus-like set of vehicles you will not find... Expedition, Caddies, Nav, Suburban, Blazer, Explorer, Excursion, Yukon, Envoy, Cherokee - or so I thought until I drove this lot... Diesel trucks have better ride quality and handling. Aside from price I can not discern what makes these the best selling trucks in America... and they only get exponentially worse over time. Have you ever seen a ten year old Detroit truck that didn't look like crap? Not many. Hummer - Better get yourself a gas card and a Nav system with every station identified along your route because at 13 MPG you and Chevron will be kissin' cousins. Land Rover - I fell in love with this car when I drove it. The interior is incredible and it was built by BMW plus it's THE Hollywood and Hip Hop (Owners: Jadakiss, Russell, Cameron Diaz, etc) wannabee ride (which I am sad to say, made me want it more) ... then I went online and the reliability scared the hell out of me. For $80k that should be the least of my concerns. Toureg - Good reviews, so I went to test drive it. The handing was okay, but the cheap Jetta plastic interior was a turn off. Volvo - Having owned a red brick rocket (850R) I wanted to like it. The ride was great with a pretty advanced stability system, useable 3rd row and well crafted interior. But the Yamaha (???) engine and extensive list of recalls and buybacks led me to... RX330 - Lexus quality, but the ride was to soft. Plus (sorry ladies) it's a girl's car. GX - Looks and rides like an LX that has been crushed from the sides. Way too top heavy and once again a soft ride. LX - It's a Land with more wood and leather. I think they are overpriced but they definitely hold their resale values. If you need this size and capability, plus have the scratch... I would not be mad at ya' AMG G-Wagon - Why do Athletes, Rappers and the Nuevo Rich buy them...because we can't. Regarding value... Edmunds says it best "Just when we thought the G-Class couldn't get any more ridiculous, along comes the AMG-tuned version." ML - Other than the star of the hood, this in not a Merc. No cargo room, sloppy handling and poor build quality. My buddy is a Sheriff and trained to drive fast. I was driving and he was in the passenger seat saying how the X was nice but it (the X) did not drive like the ML. After 15 minutes of hearing this lunacy I pulled over on Route 4 heading uphill. He punched it in sport mode and watch her climb to 100 in 4th gear. My other 6 foot buddy was comfortably sitting in the rear seat. He asked him can you believe we are doing 110? Nah, it feels so smooth like we are doing about 40. 20 minutes later his response was... "This is too much car for you. The handing and power delivery is incredible. The ML can't fu-- with this" Cayenne - $80k for a Toureg??? NEXT... Mercury,Mitsubishi, Pontiac, Saab - Surely you jest. I didn't even bother driving these and I am saddened and empathic every time I see someone in one. Kinda like I used to do when I saw someone driving a Gremlin... why did they buy it? Did they get if free from a family member who owned a dealership? Do they know it's a piece of ... What was it that you liked about the Land Rover? (LR3 I presume?) It was one of the ones I didnt drive because I read that the ride was very choppy and brutal...Also, DITTO on the Volvo..I had my checkbook out when i saw the XC90, but literally EVERYONE (7 people) I know with one, said they would never buy another Volvo..My friend picked his up in Sweden, and the front wheels came off while driving away from the factory processing point..They all said the reliablilty and customer service was appalling. And I think you gave too much credit to the Fords...UGHH... Ive had my X for 3 days now, and I still cant sleep waiting to get up in the morning just to drive the thing to work..And Im not so sure about the mpg ratings I see in the mags! Im getting almost 21 City in this thing!! |

Bozo
You must still please explain your taste in clowns. Re your sleep, you can sleep awfully well in the back of an X, just take a down comforter and some goose down pillows. This might help you getting some sleep while you "overcome" your initial excitement. Congrats on the purchase, Cheers,

The clown obsession is complex..I remember being very scared of Bozo, and then became more and more interested in him once I was over the fear...Long story..Dont ask...Ill clarify in due time...I wonder if he drives an X5 now... |

I just got mine a month ago. I looked at Toureg (dont tell anyone) and Volvo. Let me say this much. I did cost me a fotune because I live in Europe, but what a sweet ride. I got the 3.0d and it hauls serious butt. I cannot think of a single problem or con about it except that I dont have two!! Besides, when I look at the Toureg and XC-90 on the street, I snicker..............

Bozo, must be a pretty damn decent clown to be able to drive a X!
Was it the tricks/makeup/red hair that did it for you? OK OK, but you must tell later. Cheers,

This is what brought me to get an X5. When my wife was in the market for an new vehicle, the Land Rover Discovery2 and LR3 were at the top of my list since I'm a freak about Land Rovers. Since my wife has to look at everything on the market, we test drove every SUV / SAV. Nothing compares to the X5. My wife has no intention of taking a car offroad, so onroad driving performance was the most important factor. The Land Rover models just can't compare to the X5. Really, none of the others can either. |
