Engine oil cleaner

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what or if anyone has used any ENGINE OIL CLEANER and if so what brand/kind to get in stores and which auto store ?? Please if anyone knows please let me know cuz i need to clean mine out it looks like chocolate fudge in my oil area when i opened it. Plus I just bought this x5 2001 like almost 3 weeks ago. So i just changed the spark plugs and checked my oil and it's looking fudging color, so i am going to clean it out... gosh, only knows when the previous owner changed the oil and what kind of oil they used. lol
if anyone knows please let me know..
thanks agains everyone...

When it comes to that stuff, I use Lucas brand everything. I have been a huge fan of Lucas products for some time now. Should be able to get them at most auto parts stores.

Play it safe. Just change the oil and filter. Use the cleaner when you know the oil is good enough to be cleaned, and "young" enough not to be changed.

Suspect that what you are seeing is a light beige solid, something like the consistency of Vaseline.

If so, it is not unknown. It happens due to lots of short trips, and a buildup of condensation because the engine doesn't get hot enough to boil the condensation off (the moisture causes the lighter colour). An oil change is the best fix. You may need more than one. Once you drive it and get it hot after an oil change, the new oil can hold some of it in suspension and is will come out with a second oil change. A contributing factor can be the engine breather, which can get clogged. It is worth checking.

I would avoid chemical cleaners, as they can move all sorts of dirt that isn't hurting anything now, but might if it shifted.

I'm staying out of this one.....

Oh what the heck....

Suggest you change the oil (and filter) with a cheap regular oil (meaning no need for synthetic)... maybe something advertised as having high detergent properties- (go to Auto zone or Wal-Mart and stare at the cans...) Use this cheap oil as a cleaner- drive it till the engine is at normal temperatures- put on maybe 50 miles or so...

then change it out for the good stuff....full synthetic and new filter of course. This process may seem silly and expensive- but clean oil in our sophisticated engines is important. Less friction, runs cooler, etc.
