2006 X5 3.0i first oil change question
Thanks for all the great info provided here at the site and forums. I've recently completed my first oil change at 5k miles. Went with Mobile 1 syn using the oil change kit from my local dealer. I followed the DIY found on the main page and find that I have a leak. I did 18 fpt on the oil drain plug and the oil filter but found that I had a small oil slick in the garage. I've tightened the drain plug a couple more times without the torque wrench and it's still leaking just a little bit. One thing I did notice was that I didn't find a crush washer when I first removed the drain plug. Did they drop the use of the crush washer in 06? I'm afraid that I might strip the drain plug if I keep tighting it. I did put the crush washer on from the kit. Help? Thanks!!!!! |

First of, why aren't you making use of the free maintenance?
Don't torque it past the spec...you're only bound to strip it past that point. You should def have a crush washer and oil filer cover o-ring..they're both part of the kit. |

I agree w/Vig that you should have a crush washer...now, your
decision is, "do I drain that sumbitch again, simply to put on a crush washer?!" I'd vote for no...your "leak" maybe some drained oil that has simply accumulated around the drain panel: stlrs usually leave a real puddle there, which drips for days after they change the oil. I'd pop that panel and make sure the area is clean and dry; then, if your drip continues, make certain it is from the drain plug and not from the oil drain "area". GL,mD

New oil filters come with a new crush ring and seal. I'd have had the dealer do it as well, but they will not do it so soon. I have no way to know this for sure, but I have been told the engines are delivered from Germany with a break in fluid in them and it's not recommened to change the oil for at least 10K.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replys. I DID install the new crush washer. The thing I noticed was that I didn't see the original crush washer when I drained the oil. To refresh, I did use the crush washer and o-ring from the kit. I'm not ok with 15k oil change so when I do hit 15k I'll take it to the dealer, in the mean time I'll do them myself every 5k on syn oil ![]() Anyone else with an 06 X5 3.0i notice the factory crush washer was missing? Thanks! |
