Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

My 2004 X5 4.4 is doing some funny sound when cold start.

When the X is cold (such as in the morning), I start the engine, it is loud but then after 30 second to 1 minute, it will be quiet. However it is giving some rough idle sound.

such as "Woo ... Woo .. Woo..". it is like the RMP is not stable and the engine is running up and down and up. but when I look at the techno, the RMP is fine. and if I open the hood and listen to the engine, the engine is smooth. the sound is not from the engine but from the back of the engine...

Then, if I get to the back of my X and listen from the exhaust, it is making the "Woo... Woo... Woo.." sound too.

Is this normal? If the engine is hot and I start it, i can't hear those funny unstable sound.

Check for Owl's Sorry had to be said.

I am not sure what that could be, I know a bunch of peeps will say the same. Strange sounds are so had to figure out when they are converted to text. I know the X does some strange things to get it up to optimal operating temp as quickly as possible.

I would take it to a trusted shop and let them have a listen.

Let us know what it was, if anything.... Good luck.

I've had the "woo woo woo" sound at start up every now and then. I always thought it was coming from the front somewhere, but if it's from the back, maybe it's the compressor for the air suspension warming up because it goes away after a few minutes. Let us know if you're able to figure out where it's coming from...thanks.

the X is in dealer today. Lets see if they can replica the problem and find out something.

I think the sound is from the exhaust system. from the back of the engine all the way back to exhaust muffler.

the RPM is fine. well... I hope the dealer can replica the problem. As it is not showing up when the X is warm. even this morning when I start the X before I went to the dealer, the sound was not as obvious as yesterday.

I have the same sound also, in addition, I have that sound even the x ran for 30 min on the freeway. I think it's from the air condition vent. Also, there is also a "hue" sound every now and then when I am driving in residential areas. it's like a sound on top of the engine revving sound. I don't know if I should be worrying about it or not... let me know what happen~

It may be from the cooling fan. It is viscous coupled, which means the fan is actuated by the temperature of a liquid in the mechanisim. When the engine is cold the fan takes a few minutes to disengage. My 01' 4.4 does that sound for a few hundred yards down the road every morning.

dealer called, say they checked and everything is fine. no misfire or anything on the engine side.

they even let the X set over night to see if cold start in the morning can replica any problem. but with no success.

well, at least I tried.
