Unhappy New Owner- Some Questions

Dear All,

I just got my BMW X5, 2nd hand unfortunately, and after 1 week of purchase I took it to the local authorized dealer and found out that the car's odometer has been tampered with so instead of the actualy mileage reading 35K in reality it reads 100K.

So here's my question for all those that can help, frustration aside, what should be my main concern now?

How can i know if my engine is still in prestine condition or if its damaged in any way? I know my car has for sure never been in an accident through a checkup, but what else is important to inspect?

What are serious/iireversible engine damage types that I should be weary off? The engine so far purrs beautifully but when the car is hot there's a certain way I press the gas and i get a split second of clunking noise before it starts the air intake noise and picking up acceleration? In God's heaven, what could that be?

I appreciate all the advice I can get thank you

I would take the car back and get a refund. Hell of a difference in value between a 35k car and a 100k car! I do not know how it works in Jordan but in the US tampering with the odometer is grounds for voiding a sales contract.

Don't you have recourse now with an odometer tampering?

Not sure that a used car, in that part of the world, not from an authorized dealer, gives the OP much recourse. If the seller was willing to lie on the mileage, why would he take it back?

Is it a gray-market import? If so, check for water damage as well as collision damage. Lots of US vehicles were exported after they went wading in Katrina.

KM or miles? If km, then 100,000 isn't so high. If miles, I would sell it now. If km, or if you decide to keep it anyway, get the authorized dealer to do a full service (assuming you know and trust them). Change all the fluids. Compression test. Get a readout of any fault codes. And do a full inspection for any damage, including getting underneath it on a hoist. On second thought, do that step first, as it may change your decision on keeping it.

Then drive it and enjoy it.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately, we have no such laws here in Jordan at the time being. Thats because you either buy a brand new car from the BMW, Mercedes, etc store or take your chances with a slightly used import from any of the other dealers.

The car looks and feels in excellent shape, apart from minor scuffs and wear that I have been tending to for the past few days. A few burnt out light bulbs that needed replacement etc.

The engine, well, the car drives smoothly no problematic sounds per say except the one i tried to describe. It could be dirty fuel, a piston or something, or maybe engine damage i dont know.

From the sound of it what could it be? But generally, if the engine runs fine, shifts fine (transmission), it cant be serious no? Any input?

Thanks again,

Pravda

Hi JCL,

Ok, the exact readings were as follows:

OD: 57,000Km
Actual: 167,000 Km

I was told that this isn't a lot for a 2002 model?

The car was imported from Germany. It was inspected for flood damange, accidents, axis, wheels etc before purchase. The engine was tested out while driving, performed flawlessly just that little sound when the car is warm if anyone's got a clue at what am trying to describe lol.

Its really not about being cheap, considering buying a 2nd hand X5 around here gievn that a brand new X5 3.0 2007 costs close to USD 140K.

The rpm goes from beginning to end and shifts gear without a single variation in sound all goes perfect, its just that when the car is rolling and you step suddenly on the accelerator it almost feels like you are getting some air or something before the purring sound and acceleration starts.. doesnt happen each time.. could be just a litlte tuning needed?

167,000 km is a lot for an 02 car.
General usuage is normally 10-12,000 km per year.
So for an 02 it should have between 50-60,000 km on the clock.
Change all fluids, and service regularly.
Good luck

As for IIx5IIfanaticII, not everyone gets cheap cars like you do, so how about you leave your sarcasm off the board. If you have nothing constructive to say, don't bother.

in country in southeast asia, the price is 3X the price we pay here due to custom tax and fee. for example a $80K 2006 X5 would cost $240K there. A Honda Accord 2006 cost $75K.
