Inside door handles always peel, any advice?

What's up with the inside door handles always peeling? It's not even worth replacing, it'll just happen again. I've thought about trying to peel away all the crap on the surface and just leaving the portion underneath which looks better in my opinion. Has anyone tried this or has any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
