Question Rpm

If one is to floor their X5, the rpm naturally rises steadily (how fast is naturally dependent on the power of the kick down), but what if it pauses for a split second at the 4.5 mark and again 5.2 mark before continuing to go all the way until 6 something and the transmission up-shifts the car?

Also, on the calming down the rpm hangs on the 3.5 mark and again at the 2.5 mark before it rests at the required rpm depending on your acceleration etc?

In other words the needle's movement is not steady throughout. Is this normal in SUV engines or do I need some engine tuning/perhaps a more grave problem?

If you don't want gear changes check out the new Nissan Maxima which apparently has no delay in shifting...

Hi guys,

Thanks for trying this one out. But the thing is, its not gear shifting because on a kick down the gear doesn't shift until the end of the round.

In my case, with continuous acceleration, the needle pauses at 4 then jumps to five (i.e. it continues to rise which means car is still in engaged in the SAME gear) before reaching to 6 when the up-shift takes place.

yeah same thing. :s

The engine doesnt' stall though thats the weird thing, its as if the needle is the thing thats busted because engine sound/movement is continuously smooth and the car keeps accelerating even when the rpm is momentarily stuck.
