Opinions on a 01 x5 3.0

I'm looking at 01 3.0 with 83000 miles and was looking for some opinions.

-the x5 had to have 2 ball joints replaced and the back brake pads are just within spec to pass...what other things should I get looked at for an x5 with 83k?

-some of the wood accents, CD cover and rear driver side door, are cracked. Is it easy to fix or will matching be a problem to a point that all the wood trim will have to be replaced?

-the car has a faint smell of a smoke. Can the smell be taken care of with steam cleaning

-what would be a fair price for the unit? I'm in Canada and the black book (wholesale) on this would be 18k-21k and the asking price is 27k

-and lastly....huge favor to ask of someone with carfax access; is it possible to look up the x5 for me the VIN is WBAFA53501LM73681

A trick to get the smoke smell out of tha car it to put sliced apples in a bowl or two in the vehicle for a day or so at a time. It will work. Might have to do it a few times over the course of a few weeks.

Why not try and find one closer to retail? Is this for sale from a dealer? Do you have time to search and find a private seller? Does it have a lot of options? If no you may want to wait and find one with more options.

too high a price! especially for the mileage on it. What extras does it have? I'd look elsewhere. there are alot more X5 3.0 to choose from. Check out the BMWNA site for CPO X5s. I'd bet even with their high prices, you could find a better choice than what you are looking at now. at a less expensive sale price and with less mileage

That price seems too high, especially with the way they are coming down right now and especially since it has items you are going to need to have fixed. I would keep looking. I have not heard much of people having their wodd trim pieces cracking - seems like someone was a little rough on it.

01 X5 have the worst reliability history according to consumer reports...any price above free is too much....IMO>>>DON"T DO IT! What you will spend in repairs will buy you an 03 with lower miles.

I got my X5 with 87,000 miles for $23,500 (sticker) + $2,500(warranty 3year-36thousand miles)

It has all options except Nav & Xenon.

I got it from Carmax... and they are usually expensive.. but I didnt feel comfortable buying a BMW with that many miles from another dealer.

Ive driven 5k miles since... no problems

i have a 2000 x54.4i sport with 108,000 on it. i bought it early this summer for $19,000 with 102,000 it has xennon, nav (4:3 screen), sport package, activity package, black headliner, and it is in excellent condition.

i have had a couple of issues with it (upper radiator hose, expansion tank and radiator cap, also air is faint out of rear center console.) but i have really enjoyed the truck.

many people advised me against this purchase, but i have had success in the past with high mileage BMWs so i went for it.

my advice to you would be to find a cheaper one. if you are patient and vigilant, you will find that diamond in the rough. i still shop around for a comparable truck to mine and have yet to find the combination of condition, desirable option, and price to match mine. dont be quick to jump the gun, good things come to those who wait.

good luck

Priced to high, the miles are fine, the 3.0 will go close to 200k before if will simply wear itself out. Reliability compared to other years is about the same.
