external temp all over the place

First of all - this forum is great. I have already used the FAQ's a ton of times. So thank you!!!

My first question:

My '01 4.4 X5's external temperature reading seems to fluctuate intermittently. It will go from 55 degrees (accurate) all the way up to 125. Any ideas as to what might cause this?

Thanks

Defective temp sensor or loose wiring. The sensor is located in the driver's side wheel well. Had this happen to my 540 and that's exactly what it was!

Yeah it is an easy job. In the front wheel well on the splash guard you will either have air vents or, the air vents could have covers. If they are covered just take the cover off. Inside one of the air vents (I think passenger side for UK, drivers Side for USA) you will find the sensor. It should have a long tail as I call it. Just un-plug and plug in the new one. What I actually did on mine was disconnecting the sensor and clean up the plugs with electrical cleaner and emery board. Once I reconnected everything was working again!!
