2000 X5: what is a fair price?
Here is my problem: I have reluctantly agreed to sell an x5 for a friend of my wife. She did not want stangers showing up at her house, so it is now sitting in my garage (I miss my garage). It is a 2000 BMW X5 in excellent condition with only (from what I can tell) the following "blemishes": 1.There is one small ding on the hood. Nothing major, but it is there. 2.Some pixels don't light on the odometer. Searching the forum this seems like an easy fix, but it's not my car so I don't want to take it apart. 3.The back-seat drink holder does not stay shut. NO damage history, 72K miles, silver on grey and very loaded including heated seats and navigation and 19" wheels, new tires and brakes. SoCal car since new, original owner. She had wanted $24K out of it originally, but from what I can tell, that might be a little high. I think she is now willing to come down significantly in price, but I do not want to see her get ripped off. What is a reasonable asking price for this thing? -Neil Edit: ...Oh yeah, it has Xenons too. Last edited by cracker928; 09-25-2006 at 04:26 PM. |

Selling X5
It sounds like there were no modifications or improvements to her X5. In that case, a reasonable price would be in the neighborhood of around $18k to $21K. 24K would be a high retail price and not a private party price for her car. Improvements to her X would justify the high asking price. Good luck!

Thanks, I thought it might be in that area. I'll probably list it at 21K OBO then, and see what offers I get. Either that or e-bay. Or both.
There are no mods. Just an aside- does the whole "trade-in, private-party, dealer" pricing scale seem a little messed up to anybody? Why are we (supposed to be) willing to pay extra for somebody to lie to us about the same exact car that we can buy from a "private party" for less?

I real car dealer like a BMW dealer will not normally sell cars in bad shape or repaired from a accident.
I tried to trade a Cogar that had been hit and repaired on the right side and most dealers picked it up and said tht they would wholesale the car. |

Congrats!
Congratualations! Now, you can have your garage back.
I was thinking about selling my 2000 X5 4.4 Sports - 19", new tires, brakes, hoses, rdiator, expansion tank... well maintained, 66500 miles. Any advice? Where did you post/advertise? Thinking of asking $23500 - too low, high? Yor comments are appreciated. Thanks! |

I was posting all over the local ad, but if you are familiar with the Antelope Valley, you know that I am in middle of nowhere. It was listed here (of coures), traderonline (which only invite con artists), and craigslist (some con artists, but a couple of good leads).
The pricing seemed to be competetive around 20K, but the owner actually had a friend who bought it (so all this work was for nothing) for the 21,500. She had been asking 24K which was really in line with the book values, but it was taking forever to get interest when it was listed at that price (which eventually came down to 20K). I am sure that our location was the huge handicap there. What to ask really depends on how much of a hurry you are in to sell. I think that the sale price in this case was fair to both parties. But, most importantly, I have my garage back! Where are you in SoCal? |
