Yeah but that means you need to wait until you have no more green bars left. They'll pay for your oil changes at roughly 12K mile intervals.

You don't have to change your oil every 3-5K, it can go 15K without a change.

You have a service indicator on your dash. It should be on the left. You start off with 5 green bars. One by one, they will eventually not be lit; when all are gone, there will be an orange light. This is normally ~12k miles, depending on your driving. This is when you get a free oil change. They reset the light, and you start with 5 green bars again..

Do NOT wait this long though. The oil filter does not last that long though. Most owners on the board go in between those free oil changes at around ~6-7.5k miles to get an oil change; you have to pay for this one, but it's worth it. When you get to ~12k, you'll still get your free oil change.

I thought pretty much everyone here was split as to changing it at 7.5K or waiting until 12K?

Regulars all change the oil at ~7.5. New owners wait to change their oil until 12-15k until they are enlightened . If you're using a qualtiy oil like M1 or Amsoil, the oil itself will easily last till 15k. Just change the filter at 7.5k and you're good to go another 7.5k from there.
