Lift Gate rattle
I am about to pull my hair out. This lift gate rattle, which is well documented on this site, is absolutely the most annoying thing ever encountered. I have adjusted the rubber bumpers out several times and am now at the point where there is no thread left. I adjust it, goes away for awhile, then returns. Most recently I have used duct tape over the rubber pad that, when closed, is in contact with the rubber bumpers. My next course of action is to try the felt idea over the rubber stops and tape around the side latches. I am serious, if this does not work, the BIMMER will be sold, and never purchased again.
Seriously not happy with our favorite german engineers.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I'm guessing your chasing the wrong fix. Generally, adjusting the stops should work, if not I'll bet you have another source of the rattle. Keep looking elsewhere. Don't give up. If you trade the X5, you will just find other problems with whatever you buy.

I had the same problem, adjusted the bumper stops and the rattle soon came back. I found a simple fix. The rattle is coming from the hatch latch. The top part is sort of "V" shaped and fits into the female slot of the bottom tail gate. Look on each side of the male "V" and you will see the paint is worn and has been rubbing the female slot. This is what causes the rattle/knock when you hit a bump. I took some 1/2" wide thick rubber tape, about 1/8 inch thick and put a piece on each side of the female "V". Have not a single rattle in months. Was driving me crazy also... hopes this works for everyone....

I concur with cmartin. It is indeed the latch assembly. The fix is very simple. Just spray a teflon based lubricant up into the latch assembly. Open and close the hatch a few times, then repeat the application of teflon. I did this about a year ago and have had no rattles since. I used RemOil. Which is a teflon firearms lubricant made for Remington. You can find it anywhere where guns and ammo are sold.Mark

I thought I had a rear hatch rattle...was driving me nuts. Then I tapped on the top middle of the spoiler...there was the rattle. Just tightened and no more noise...the center T30 torx screw was loose. Maybe it's not the hatch?

I grabbed some felt furniture pads from Home Depot and put them on the posts. I have to shut the back a little harder than I otherwise would but rattle has been gone for over a month now. If I get one that returns I've made note of the post about the bottom latch. So far, so good. Best $2 I've spent

It is common problem for the Xs in cold climate area. I had the same problem last year and it drove me crazy. I thought something got loose in the back of the car, but after realize the hatch is rattle, I bought some green pads from ACE HARDWARE and taped on top of the rubber adjuster. Problem solved! It just the cold weather made the rubber to shrink and hard, that's how the hatch got loose.
