exhaust emission deterioration

Hi Guys,

i am a new member and was wondering if anyone can help with an orange warning light which has come up. in the manual it means "deterioration of exhaust emission". Upon taking it to a local mechanic he said that no specific waring code came up and was able to remove the light. 5 minutes later the light came back on. the engine is quite hesitant and sluggish and seems to be cutting out when you put your foot flat out on the accelerator. The mechanic has said it could be the air flow meter? I am taking it to my usual mechanic next week but was wondering if anyone has had problems like this in the past? Any help would be appreciated
