How does it pull air from outside the engine comparment? I was looking at the airbox setup and there is no way its pulling in air from anywhere else other that the engine compartment! Well at least that's the way it is on my 4.6! In order for the system to pull air from outside it needs to be either right behind the bumper grill, or fed via a duct that takes in air from outside.
I'm still going to try the mod I suggested, to see if there are any significant changes, even if it is good or bad, you never know till you try. As far as I can see in order for a system to be truly CAI it needs to be getting air from outside the bay.

It pulls air via the lower ducting from behind the bumper area. It does not have to be a RAM air set-up to pull outside air. ALL BMW's of current iteration have true CAI from the factory, FYI. They just typically suffer from not having enough volume as I described above.

Thanks
Brad

I must have missed the duct running into the box from outside or bumper area. I must have a look again. Thanks!!

I had the Gruppe M system fitted to my e39 M5. Its a beautiful well finished system and has a fantastic large intake. Get the pics up as soon as you install.

ur 4.6is should have an air duct that feeds the intake, at least
on the AFE kit it does. i don't know about the Dinan setup. look
at the pic below. if u look directly across from the silver ring that's
near the MAF, u should see an opening for a tube. air comes out of
that opening and is fed into the air filter. also, the filter sit behind
the headlight; so, it will get air from behind the bumper.

open ur hood. see the piece of black plastic smack dab in
between ur headlights? remove that piece. u'll see that
that tube leads to ur current stock airbox. if u look at our
pics, u should be able to get an idea of the tube i am talking
about.
