2004 X5 wouldnt start today.

I went to start my X5 today and the alarm went off and it wouldnt start. So then I thought maybe the alarm was on somehow. But then I got out shut the alarm off. Locked and unlocked the X5 again went to start it and the same thing happened. Then I looked over at my nave screen and it was asking for a 4 digit code. So then I start looking in my glove box for a code. None anywear. Then I call roadside and they said they had no idea what it was so they sent a tow truck. In the mean time i called the dealer talked to the service manager and he said he had no idea what it was. So I hang up with him. So I tell myself there is no way im getting towed for some stupid shit like this. So I put in 0000 for the code and pushed enter. I tried to start it and it fired right up. It hasnt done it sine and i must have started it at least 10 times since since then. Does anyone have anyclue what the hell happened and If i should be worried about it happening again. Also what is that code for and where do you get this code.

There is something called a security code on the BMW X5. You can program the security code for one time use. It is something the car owner programs. This is a security feature that can be used to prevent someone from stealing your car when you are in a less than desirable neighborhood for instance. It is reset everytime. You can find the option on your menu screen. It says code. In my Computer/Navigation user manual, the code information is on page 69. You can also find the manual under Navigator on the X5world front page.

Good luck!

I'm thinking you inadvertently accessed the CODE feature when you last left the car. Smart thinking to try the default 0000's.

Frozty,

The manual is your friend.

I definately didnt set it by accident. All i did was turn off the X get out and hit the lock doors button on key just like i always do. And something stells me something else is up. Tonight my nav screen shut off and would not go back on. And my signal light indicators on dashboard were not works but then i checked my blinkers outside the car and they were actually working. I think its gotta be a fuse or something. But then i shut it off turn it back on and everything is acting normally again. Very weird. I think it is related the the not starting and code incident of the day before

Bimmer electronics can get weird when the battery gets weak. There was a thread earlier this week by someone else having electrical gremlins.

It's worth getting checked. These issues should be covered under warranty.
