X5 3.0i oil filters from ebay, safe?
the seller says the so called "MANN" branded filters are just as good as the genuine bmw filters. for those of you who are more experienced in regards to autos than i am, is it true or is the ebay seller BSing? thank

I have no specific experience with Mann filters. I have used the OEM BMW filters, and work at a company that sells filters for our own equipment.
Filters are not all the same. for two filters that are the same size and appear similar, there are often differences in the cage that holds the filter in shape, the filtering medium (durability, and filtering capability in microns), the pressure relief valve, and so on. All of these factors can impact filter performance. When you hear horror stories about collapsed filters, dissolved filter medium, etc, you can not help but think of the cheap knock-off filters being produced without the quality control of the OEM filter. Yes, I know Mann makes some good filters. That is true of many filter manufacturers. Many manufacturers make several lines of filters, with difference materials, and different micron ratings. The part numbers will be the same or similar, with little to differentiate the various products. A good example (not BMW) is the Motorcraft FL1, FL1A, and CFL1 (and whatever models they have added more recently) All have different specs, all fit the same engines. You get what you pay for. In the scheme of things, filters are cheap, even from a dealer. I would buy only OEM filters, at the best price I could. At the end of the day, it is your call, your money, and your risk. My stealer is charging $18+ for the 4.4 filter kit. which will be ver $20 for the filter after tax. that is not cheap for a oil filter.

If that doesn't sway you, there is always the old standby of the toilet paper roll, it is the cheapest filter going (considering only the up-front cost). Just kidding. No-one would actually do that, would they?

First question you need to ask yourself is where is he getting those filters?
Are they stolen? Second question you gotta ask yourself is suppose their bogus? Do you really want to put fake filters in your ride? Next question might be do you feel lucky? Quote:

I sorta remember Mann being an oem mfg for BMW...
maybe my memory is fading. I've used Deutsch brand, too: they looked freakin identical to a stlr filter. I don't think name brand filters are space station assembly stuff. BMW is not making filters; someone is to their specs. I realize the filter mfg's make diff. levels for different customers, but Mann is not a quick lube brand. Not an Ebay fan...you could buy those at any decent auto parts joint for the same price. GL,mD
