We have a raging agreement here - stick with OEM.

In the interests of education, have a look at one or two of the filter studies done by enthusiasts over the past few years. This first one found five different constructions of Fram filters (same part number, different labelling, ranging from Tough Guard, to Extra Guard, to Double Guard, etc). Only one of the Fram models passed his test.

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters.html#avoid

This test found that the different Fram filter models (all the same part number/size, different labelling) varied from 65 square inches to 128 square inches. I wonder what the OEM spec was.

PLEASE don't use Fram. Your friendly BMW dealer has exactly what you need.

As a matter of fact, the Fram will cost twice as much as the OEM filter ($16 bucks for the Fram compared to $8 for the OEM)...at least that was the last time I've checked the local part chain.

oem definately. My idiot brother got a oil change at a car wash once in his 540i Sport a long time ago. They used a fram filter. When they took the filter out after 7500 miles it wasnt 100% intact. it deteriorated. He sold the car right after that.
