Towing hitch recommendations for 05 4.4i ?
I am new to this forum and would like to get some recommendations from fellow X5 owners. I am considering using my X5 to tow a covered car trailer with a Dodge Viper to various car shows. Can anyone tell me if the X5 will tow this kind of weight? (3800 lbs plus trailer weight which is unknown at this time) If so, what hitch package would you recommend? Is there a way to remove the hitch when not being used? Thanks in advance ZDigital1 |

You should have no problem pulling that, but I would strongly suggest you go with the OEM hitch kit. You would be asking for trouble going aftermarket, in my opinion.

I pull a 4500 pound boat with no problem.
Oem is the only way to go. |

To clarify, you can remove the tow ball, and what remains is a 2" square receiver. It is that receiver that takes either the fold-down step, or a standard 2" rubber plug with the BMW logo on it (comes with the hitch).
With that weight of trailer, you will need brakes on the trailer, either electric actuation with a brake controller in the X5, or surge brakes on the trailer (no controller required). Make sure you read the install instructions on the home page. Whether or not you do it yourself, the instructions will give you more info. Good luck. Jeff
