improving exhaust note

Hi Guys,

I want a meaner and better sounding exhause note from my 4.4i X5 and have heard of taking the resonator out and putting straight pipes in their place. Has anyone done this and if so how did it sound? Also did it create any problems with various sensors etc.
any feedback would be appreciated

thanks
frank

I have a 3.0i and I removed the resonator and put in straight pipes..I already had the supersprint, so now my car sounds like a monster. There are no sensors involved anywhere near the resonators.. so there is no problem removing them... but for the V8's I think people reccomend putting in the X-pipe instead of straight pipes...but the cost is very similar...go for it...it will prolly sound amazing!

How much is a full remus exhaust for a 4.4i? I'm REALLY liking the grumbly rolling effect in the frontpage vid.

I´ve first put the X pipe but the noise wasn´t exactly what I was looking for, but you could tell the difference. Than I put the Remus exhaust and the sound got much more powerful.

Here´s my post with a video sound of my car with X pipe, and x pipe + Remus.

NOTE: The video sound don´t do justice for the sound difference between the two.

I have an '02 4.6 and just removed the resonator and replaced with straight pipes. The sound of my exhaust is almost exactly similar to the post by J.Seven. The reason why I decided to go with the straight pipes and not the x-pipe is that the straight pipes are clamped in (not welded) and can be easily removed and replaced with an x-pipe if I ever decide to go that route (which I am not)...I did not want a new pipe welded in incase I wanted to change. I think the straight pipes alone sound fine on my X. Some guys claim rattle and chatter without the x-pipe but I have no complaints.

The X pipe uses the pulses of the opposing cyclinders for better scavanging. It acts like a jet pump to pull the exhaust from the other pipe and give it two exits. The straight pipes are just that, straight pipes. The rattles people are hearing may actually be afterburning in the pipes which is cause by too much back pressure. It could also shattered catilytic converters rattling in thier cases (could also be from too much back presuure).

The stock resonator probably has less back pressure than the staright pipes. Each cylinder impulse is carried to the resonator by it's respective pipe (left or right); but, then it has two different exits to go out after the resonator (left and right muffler). With the straight pipes it's left or right the whole way back.

By easing the back pressure on each bank, do you then increase breathing and HP? ie performance at all levels including low end?
