Climate Control Unit Buttons not working

Hello Fellow members! I am a new member and a new 2002 4.4 X5 owner.
Unfortunately the A/C control buttons were broken, so I bought a new face plate from ebay to replace the broken one. Now that I've replaced the face plate, the buttons do not control anything and the unit shows the settings before the replacement. Please Help!!

Does anyone know what the problem with the unit or the buttons is? As far as I know, I replaced everything as was before.

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the info, I replaced the old unit back, but still nothing is working and the settings are as before. Does this mean I've ruined the climate control?

any help is appreciated

Just a plug in right? Might be a short now.
