Trouble adjusting fan speed for Front window defogger

I am having a difficulties lowering the fan speed when I press the front window defogger. Once the button is pressed, the fan turns on full blast and when I try to lower it, the front defogger switches off. Any tricks to lower the fan speed when the defogger is on?

Thanks

Correctomundo...that button that directs air Up, hit "Snowflake" button
to get the A/C compressor going for dry air, adjust temp, (prob. hot to start),
and adjust fan speed.

That High Speed Defrost button is for very quick defogging in situs...
