First real problem..

Cant complain..After 18 months, I encountered my first two "real" issues with the X. I was pulling into my driveway today when I heard this horrible sound coming from the steering wheel/column...I dont know how else to explain it, except for nylon rubbing together...Or like scratching a couch or something..Except EXTRA loud..Got it booked in for next week, so hopefully it gets taken care of. That and the sideview mirror "dips" in reverse about 50% of the time nowadays. Stlr said the motor is dying...Are these common issues, or should I see this as a $$$ign in my post warranty future?

i know this sounds obvious but ........... you know the passenger mirror dips down ONLY if your "adjust side-view mirror" switch is to the LEFT/DRIVER position, right?

LOL..Yep. The first time I was "reminded" about that, I actually got offended. "Of course I know that!", I told the stlr. However - and this is NOT an exaggeration, to include yourself - I receive the exaact same response from everyone I've mentioned it to. So, afterthinking about it, I guess it only makes sense that the obvious should be pointed out, especially if it involves potentially unneccessary work....LOL...

And to hijack my own thread, last night my father-in-laws hand was in the window when my wife asked me to put the windows up...I had NO idea that the windows detected when something was still in the window! We had a £20 bet that none of us could deliberately put our hands in the window to test it out....Nobody won!!! We were all to scared...

It could be linked to key settings. My wife had both mirrors dipping at one point. I would get in and nothing happened. Then I tried opening the X with her key and, sure enough, both mirrors dipped. Took it to the dealer for something else and happened to mention this and they reprogrammed the memory module. That's when we lost the automatic retract of the steering column. (Another story for another day.)

I had the same thing with the steering. I would have to look to see what they replaced. The first time they replaced something in the steering but it still made the noise so I never took home, I took the tech for a drive to show him the sound. Eventually, they replaced the the whole steering and had to remove the engine to do it. They fixed it though. Let me know and I can look at the service order tonght and tell you exactly what they replaced.

I've got a similar problem where the mirror doesn't fully dip .. it seems to get stuck or just stop.
I'm just living with it at the moment.
Lets face it, electric mirrors usually only get adjusted once in a while - dipping in reverse happens regularly so probably wears the motor....but it still shouldn't fail!!

I don't know if it is the same problem but mine was anytime I turned the steering wheel it made a very loud sound, I described as denim or nylon rubbing together. Yes, better to have it done under warranty than not. Good Luck.
