Quick question about brake squeal

I have 2002 X5 3.0i with oem brake rotors and pads. I notice a brake squeal when I come to a complete stop, and there is this sound that is like a metal on metal sound (whoosing, scraping sound) that leads up to the brake squeal. I think it may be brake dust, becuase once the brakes cool down or I do a harder stop, the squeal does not occur and plus I live in Nevada. I searched the forums, and could not find an exact answer to my quesion. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
