Technical Question - Instrument Cluster

Does anyone know if a 4.6 /4.8 instrument cluster will function properly if installed in a 3.0? Are the harnesses the same or are adapters available? Will the tach lights and all of the computer functions work?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

No you cannot fit different clusters into different X's.

It will fit, but will not work correctly. So things will work and some things won't.
Anytime you do replace your complete cluster unit you will need the dealer to program it with your odmeter reading of your orginal unit.

does it have to be exact for it to function or does the computer not know?

What's redline on the 3.0? Bet it's not the same as the 4.6/4.8, so your tach will never read correctly.

I went down this line when I had an e39 540 and wanted to fit the M5 cluster. I bought the cluster from ebay and fitted it myself only to find out that a few things worked and most didn’t. So I contacted a few specialist and BMW, only to find out that, used cluster can not be fitted to another BMW as each cluster is individually coded to each car they make. They also said that there is the very rare chance that you come across a cluster that has the exact codes and configuration that may work but it's very rare. They also told me that if you have for example, a 3.0 X5, you must fit a 3.0 cluster, in no way will another work. Also the MPH on the 4.6 and the rest will not read right as they calibrated differently. The 4.6/4.8 has oil pressure control where the rest have MPG reading. The oil temp lights will not work and so on.

i was thinking of also getting an instrument cluster from ebay but with the longer display on the bottom. mine came with a basic 3.0 cluster and i wanted to swap out mine with the one with longer display on the bottom that I found on ebay with almost the same miles as I have.

But after reading this post...am glad that I didn't. The new cluster from ebay did have an extra plug in the back that I know I didn't have since I opened up my cluster to install cluster rings. The used one on ebay had a BLUE, WHITE AND BLACK...while mine only had a plug for WHITE and BLACK.

There is conversion info on the home page for upgrading the cluster from "Low" to "High".

Oh I thought the only thing that wouldn't work was the oil pressure gauge. I have a 4.8 cluster and was planning on fitting it to my 3.0 without High OBC.
