Question 107K miles + original transmission + PCH from LA to SF?

So I know i've asked for your opinions regarding how much life you think i've got left in my transmission now that I'm at 107K miles.

That said, on the weekend after finals, weather permitting, I wanted to take my gf up Highway 1 from LA to SF and show her the Bay Area for her first time ever, via the most amazing road on the planet

Obviously, due to the type of driving (hilly, twist, constantly shifting between 2nd, 3d, 4th gears, with a few stints in 5th), coupled with the mostly complete lack of cell phone reception, i'm wondering whether you would all discourage me from making the drive considering the age of my X5's transmission?

As for the drive itself, I should mention that I've done it nearly every year for the past 8 yrs (except last year, and maybe one other) and have always been smart about not going while raining, etc. I'm so good at the drive, that I've managed to time it just right to grab a bite to eat at Nepenthe and still make it home to Mill Valley by 9 PM at night or so.

So yeah ... your thoughts?

Why worry about what hasn't happened. Do it, enjoy, if something happens deal with it when it comes. Have fun.

Doesn't X5 have same transmission as E39. I had one of those in Europe and service advisor said when asking for maintenance for it, that at appx. 160k miles they change oils. So, I assume it will last a long time.

I was thinking about that, but I can't borrow those cars for this trip because my parents need their cars for commuting to their respective jobs.

That said, my parents are driving down to see me in SD for TG and they're obviously coming with the Benz. But my Mom can't swap with my X5 because she has terrible arthritis in her leg which makes it nearly impossible for her to lift herself up inside my X5, otherwise, that would be an option, yes.

In fact, my parents and I were just discussing this by phone and concluded that if i make the trip it'll have to be with my car.

So I guess the real issue, in applying good ol' Cardozo's balancing test lol, becomes whether the burden of forgoing the trip entirely is less than the probability of harm times the gravity of injury resulting therefrom, should a breakdown occur in the middle of nowhere on the PCH?!

If you have not experienced any problems with the transmission and it shifts fine, chances are low that it will go out on the trip. Just do it

It's not like you're having problems. Go for it. What a great a ride. Love the PCH as long as there are no campers or RVs in front of you

Time it so you catch a sunset
