Opinions wanted: Upgrading from '00 to '04-05 X5
There are other SUV/SAV's that peak my interest, mostly the Cayenne TT and the Range Rover Sport (although a lot of people have negative criticism of the drive-ability and creature comforts of the RR). However, there are a lot of things that have kept me from changing to another manufacturer thus far; a good friend of mine is a mechanic at BMW, BMW's are great cars all around and that the price point/resale is still decent on X5's. So here is the big question, if staying in the BMW family is the best option, will upgrading to a 2004+ X5 4.8 make me that much happier? I know the navigation (although a little dated now), the adjustability in ride height, the added power and all the little things in owning a 'newer' car should help my decision; but is it worth spending 50k on a vehicle that is nearly identical to what I drive now? Thanks for any opinions, it is much appreciated. -jason |

Panoramic Roof and Dynamic Xenons aren't bad, but is the ride that much different? The overall feel of car on the road? Trying to turn the wheel in the X5 isn't a chore for me, but if my girlfriend tries to drive my truck it is always a complaint I hear.
Is the navigation decent in the '04+?

Well, there are obvious differences that you and others have already pointed out. I've driven both and IMO the rides are not 50k worth different. The newer warranty, less problems/better peace-of-mind may factor into it as well.
Some people just like newere cars all the time, other people drive the car til it dies and then look for another. I prefer to drive until it dies - but that's just me. There is no way I would make do this 'upgrade' for this money, unless your current ride just can't go anymore. |

I recall taking a Porsche 911 class many years ago from the great Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods. Bruce made the strong argument to purchase the most recent year that you could afford. With that in mind and understanding that it's easy to spend your money (), I say go for it.
On an aside, what is keeping you from pulling the trigger on a Cayenne Twin Turbo other than cost? As much as I love my X5, that's the vehicle that I've been eyeing for my next automotive purchase. Good luck! |

Some folks do not like the aggresive gearbox nor the sport suspension of the 4.8is, test drive it to see if it suits your driving preference

Might also want to look at the warranty differences just to
edge you one way or the other.

I think I will take a trip to the BMW dealer on wednesday and go on a test drive.
I am not too concerned with warranty issues. The price of a Cayenne CTT isn't so much the issue as is the styling of the SUV. I really like it with some nice Techart wheels, lowering module etc etc, but at that time I have spent another 10k at least. With the newer X5, I am pretty happy with the way it looks and can save a couple bucks. If anyone has any opinions at all on the topic, don't be shy. I appreciate everyone's input. -jason |
