2001 X5 SES Light On

I just bought a 2001 X5 and right after I put gas for the 1st time, the Service Engine Soon 'SES' light came on and has been there ever since. I have done the following so far;
1. Oil Change
2. Gas Tank Cap Replaced with new cap from BMW
I also took it to a mechanic who diagnosed it with an error code 0443 or 98 (essentially same thing).
Can anyone help me please.
