Which would you choose...4.6 or 4.8?

I'm currently in negotiations on a 2003 4.6is...but just found this one...and wondering what yall think....

2003 X5 4.6is
Imola Red/Black
51k miles
CPO
NAV
Running Board
Brush Guard
$38,000

or

2004 X5 4.8is
Imola Red/Black
38k miles
Pano roof
$45,000

So, is the 4.8 worth $7k more than the 4.6? i'd probably have to buy ext. warranty after it expires, whereas the 4.6 is good till 100k.
Just want to know which is better...before i even propose this other option to the wife.

thanks
franklin

@ .16 a mile (if it were a lease) that's about 44k miles difference ($7k / .16)

The actual difference in mileage is 13k or about $4960 (13k x .16), so subtracting the $4960 from $7k it's only ~ a $2k difference for the bigger engine.

Plus the '04 should have what? about a year or 2 left on the free maintenance?

I'ld say go with the '04.

Take a look and drive in both! Best way to make a decision. Although the saving between the 2 makes the 4.6 very tempting. Not sure about the US market but the 4.8 is loosing quite a bit of money here in the UK where the 4.6 has really taking its hit, and is quite stable now. Also I read the 4.6 is slightly quicker than the 4.8 but you do get a few more features in the 4.8 over the 4.6
Its really all down to personal choice. When I bought my 4.6 I was actually looking at the 4.8 also, but I could not justify paying thousands more for a vehicle that really isnt much more different, and the depreciation rate on the 4.8 in the UK also played a big roll on my choosing the 4.6 instead.

If you plan to do any major mods, then I would say 4.6. There are way more capabilities for performance upgrades such as superchargers, computer reprogram etc for the 4.6 than the 4.8

However, I have th 4.8is and absolutely love it. sure do wish there was more upgrades available performance wise.

i wish i could go test drive them both.....but both are about 1000 miles away...so i'll be buying them sight unseen.

well i have 3 'backup' cars
- E46 M3
- E39 M5
- E90 335

but my situation now is.....we will definitely get the X5...its just either i get it now, or next year. I found a really nice and fairly affordable M3 locally...and am thinking of getting the M3 now (assuming i didnt get the Imola Red 4.6) and then next year will trade in the Z4 for the X5.

Here comes the dilemma...right now the budget is around $40k max...so the 4.8 is $5k overbudget...and we can definitely get the 4.8 next year with the z4 trade in...now is the 4.8is something i should 'wait' for?

will chat with the wife tonite about increasing our budget.

I plan on minor mods - intake, exhaust and software.

thanks
franklin
