SUDDEN LOSS POWER while driving :(

Hi guys,

I need some help on this one. I been getting a rather weird problem lately.

I'm getting this problem while driving smoothly along the road then suddenly I will hear a LOUD LOUD LOUD BANG! Coming from under/rear...(dont know the exact place), as this happens I get a sudden LOSS OF POWER and I get really scared... Then my natural reaction is to release the gas and push it back down again, and then it returns to normal.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't going over and bump or podholes on the road, as this had happened quite a few times. I'm actually guessing there might be something wrong with the transmission or something along the line.

What do you guys reckon? Thanx for helping out

Thanx for reading this,
Jack

My cousin had a problem like this on his 740i! Turned out to that the battery was done. Once replaced it all went fine again. Test the battery first, if the battery is good then it could be what the other guys suggested.

I can't imagine a battery problem causing a LOUD LOUD LOUD BANG.

I thought the same, but my cousin got a bang/thump on his 740i. We also though it was either gearbox or something more serious. He also experienced loss of power. So first thing that was done before going into serious expense was to check the simple things. On an inspection the battery came up as being dead and under powered. So a new one was installed and since then the problem never came back. I'm not saying its the same for vehicles, but its worth checking first.

Thanx very much for the input guys, really appreciate it

As for the exact spot where the BANG is coming from, I'm not exactly sure. My girlfriend and I had experience this on number of occations. She believes the that sound is coming from the rear end of the car, but I think it coming from under the car or near the front end.

But I'll surely take the car into inspection soon, as I think this is quite dangerous to drive around in. Cause you never know where this will happen and where.

Thanx for once again. If anyone else has any idea about it, welcome to some more inputs

I have an 01 X5 and am approaching 95000 miles...
I was going down the freeway at about 75 mph and lost power, & then the service engine light came on... I pulled over and put it in neutral, it was running very rough... I shut it down and restarted after a couple seconds, it started fine, engine service light went out, and ran fine...
I took it to the dealer... no codes were stored, and they have no idea what had happened...

Help!
