Alain, check for any leaks parked, and also try to further isolate the problem sniffing. If there aren't any leaks, I'd lean towards a bad o2 sensor causing it to run rich..also monitor your fuel milege to see if it has decreased at all.

I think I found the origin of the smell. There is an oil leak, I would guess from the oil breather. It is not the exhaust gas that I smell. I think I smell oil burning on the exhaust pipe when the pipe is hot. I will get it checked tomorrow by the garage and hopefully the extended warranty will take care of it.

i always smell a little bit of exhaust when i start my 3.0 x5 in the garage in the morning. i stay stationary for about 1 min for warm up and during that time i'd smell exhaust. any other time there's no smell.

So the garage just called me and I was right on this one. They told me that there was a leak from the oil breather lines at the rear of the engine as well as from the oil pan gasket. What I smelled was indeed burning oil which dripped on the exhaust pipe.
