Smell of exhaust gas in the car

For the last few days I have been smelling exhaust gas in the car. I quickly check this afternoon but could not locate where it is coming from. Will spend more time tomorrow to see if I can isolate the problem. The smell is more obvious when driving slow in trafic.

Alain, check for any leaks parked, and also try to further isolate the problem sniffing. If there aren't any leaks, I'd lean towards a bad o2 sensor causing it to run rich..also monitor your fuel milege to see if it has decreased at all.

I think I found the origin of the smell. There is an oil leak, I would guess from the oil breather. It is not the exhaust gas that I smell. I think I smell oil burning on the exhaust pipe when the pipe is hot. I will get it checked tomorrow by the garage and hopefully the extended warranty will take care of it.

i always smell a little bit of exhaust when i start my 3.0 x5 in the garage in the morning. i stay stationary for about 1 min for warm up and during that time i'd smell exhaust. any other time there's no smell.

So the garage just called me and I was right on this one. They told me that there was a leak from the oil breather lines at the rear of the engine as well as from the oil pan gasket. What I smelled was indeed burning oil which dripped on the exhaust pipe.
