Auxilary Heating (again...)

Hello all,

A quick question. It's my first winter with my X5 over here in France. My 4.4i is equiped with the auxilary heating. I have a small remote to set in on or off.
When I set the thing on, I hear some noise from under the bonet and some hot are blows from the auxilary exhaust pipe (the small one under the left side). So I asume all is normal.
Question: How long does it take to start blowing warm air in the car ?
5 mins ? 10 mins ? 15 mins? I understand that the system heats up the coolannt fluid, so I would asume that it takes a least 15 mins to start blowing warm air inside the cabine. Can you guys confirm ?
I would apriciate as much feed back as possible.
Many thanks and I'm very happy to have found this international forum.

Bye for Now.

what is aux heating?

Is that where your car heats for 30 minutes after it is turned off?

My car the heating is off. I am also having the same problem.
it takes 5-10 minutes to blow out warm air (not cold but warm air) and then another 15-20 minutes to blow out warmER air, sometimes hot.

Now this is my first winter with the X5 as well. I dont know if the heating system in the X5 sucks or there is something wrong with my car.

Hi Squirrel,

I have the Aux Heating but have had a lot of problems with it. I don't think it has anything to do with warming the coolant, it is a hot air blower, as found on trucks to heat the cabins when the engine is off. You should feel the warm air with-in a couple of minutes. However one of the problems I have had is that the air being blown out of the heater isn't very warm. (The dealers solution.....turn the heating in the car to full the night before!) The dealership said that they have fixed it, but as this was in the spring we haven't been able to test as the Aux Heating wont work above 5 deg C.

Squirrel,

Are you indeed French or just living there?

Hello Don,

Thanks for you input. I'm french and living in France .
I read about the auxilary heating system and it seems that the BMW system warms the coolant fluid that then circulates in the heating system when warm enought. The thing is that on my car the auxilary heating starts but after 5 mins the cabin is still not warmed at all. I can't feel any warm air comming in. I would need to leave it on for at least 30 mins to find out but I havn't had the occasion yet. That's why I wanted to have some feedback from other users.

BTW, would you happen to have a GPS europe CD ? for a MKIII nav system.

Cheers

Squirrel

Hi Guys, I am very happy with my aux. heating. It did take me some time to figure everything out but works great. Its 5 degrees here and all I do is put on the heater via the remote approx. 10mins before and I get into a warm car.

I leave my temp setting all year round on 22 degrees, but if you want a warm cabin via aux. heating you have to turn the knob in the middle of the dash to 3 red dots.
If you don't get any results from that, your remote might be set to "ventilate" and your dealer would have to program it to heating.

Hope this helps guys.

Squirrel,

It sounds like you have the same problem as I had. I have had two previous X5's both with Aux Heating and they worked great. Even on the coldest mornings the car was noticeable warm after 5-10 minutes.

Ajogu, what knob in the middle are you talking about?

Squirrel, the reason I asked about your Country of origin, was firstly to complement you on your English, and secondly, because I had been told that the French couldn't pronounce 'squirrel' properly. A friend of my fathers owns a ski lodge near Tignes and he calls it 'The Squirrels' for this reason. I know it is childish, but you would understand if you met him.

Thanks Don for the complement.

I did some more work this morning. I put the Auxilary heater on via the remote. Goes on alright. All water hoses are warm under the bonet after 15 mins.
But no warm air in the cabine. Does it only blow warm when the water is at a certain temperature ? Must I leave it longer than 15mins ? It was only 5 degrees C this morning.

In the manual it says that you can set the temperature of the axillary heating when the key is in position 1. I can't have access to any setting except on the computer screen.

Cyril the Squirrel :-)
