Headlamp wiper jets?

Ok, maybe I am an idiot but I can't activate the jets that squirt out the wiper fluid on the headlamps. I did a search and read the owner's manual and it states

"With the special wash program 6 - With every fifth actuation of clean the windsheild 5 when the vehicle 's lighting is switched on."

The best I can at interpeting this is
1) Turn on the headlamps
2) Pull the wash level towards (5) - (5 times?)
3) Push in the "S" button on the wiper lever (6)

Anyhow - I tried several combination of the above as well as everthing else I could think of and unless they are broke I feel like an idiot.

Oh I bought a used 2001 X5 3.0 with approx 53K miles. I love driving it but the jury is still out on it overall (The first trip to dealer for an oil change turned into a $3,500 adventure).

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
MC

No need to have "lights on"; that's just
the lost in translation section.

Pull right hand stalk toward you, gently and
release=short squirt on windshield.

Push in the S button at end of stalk, = Super wash
with serious squirts on windshield and the headlight
washers should squirt, also.

Every "5th time", +/-, the normal squirt is activated,
(as in first step above), the Super Squirt takes place.

Mine is 5 1/2 yrs old and works perfectly, still.

If yours is not, something is amiss.

Don't feel bad, I read the manual several times and it still seems confusing. It rains so often in the PNW that I figured it didn't matter anyway.

I would have sh#! my pants if I took my car in for an oil change and walked out with a $3,500 bill, what did they repair?

Thanks for the quick response - I think there is something wrong with them I can get the super wash on the windshield but nothing out of the headlamp jets.

Lets see the $3500 oil change at the dealer included:

$93 Oil change
$1098 Full Brake Job
$230 Replace Serpentine Belts
$99 Coolant Flush
$1111 Replace Power Steering Pump (& Lines)
$500 New Thrust Arm Bushings
$99 Alignment
$25 Shop Supplies
$212 Tax

Sweet, huh? Anybody know someone in Cincinnati that works on BMW's?

MC
