Radio turns on, but no sound through speakers

Hi,

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 with a radio that comes on, but no sound comes through the speakers. Started about a week ago, when I heard a snap, crackle and pop through the speakers and in the front right of the car. Checked all radio-related fuses and they are fine.

In addition, right after starting the car, a very low chimes comes on and rings about 10 times, then goes away. I have never heard the chime before the radio went out. The instrument cluster shows a taillight failure, but nothing related to the radio or other failure.

Anyone had a similar problem?

Many thanks for info as I have been without radio sound for a week.
