Problem with transmission going into drive

Can anyone tell me why I have a delay going from reverse into drive ? It only happens after the first start. The outside temp is not a factor.

Also, I have squeeling in my brakes at slow speed applications. Why ?

Thanks in advance for your help. NB

I just got mine back from BMW yesterday. They checked the transmission fluid, pumps etc and all is well. The fluid is clear and ad the correct level and there is no "wayward" metal anywhere to be found. They reset the "adaption" program to see if that has made any difference (it hasnt)so the next step is for the BMW "senior" tech to have a look on his visit next month. I will keep you posted.. Ian

I have the same problem with my x5 3.0, 2003.In the morning going from reverse to drive, x5 stalls for a few seconds before driving normally.I took my x5 to dealer, they kept it for 2 days and couldnot find any fault code or any other problem wit transmission.

Ok, finally sorted out!! After many trips in and out of the dealer, they finally agreed to replace the transmission. Fortunately it was done under the extended warranty that I had paid for (otherwise it was going to be a $10k experience!!) The new tranny works just great, and I have had no further issues. Bonus... I now have an additional 2 years warranty on the tranny!! Oh yeah... it seems that there was an issue with some transmissions not made in germany.. Ian

That's not good, although I have an extended warranty as well. The transmission works flawlessly after the first R to D shift of the day. Doesn't seem that the whole thing is bad, but?. I wonder how the shifter actuates the transmission?

Well, I don't know specifically about the X5, but early production X3s with the 3.0i and 5AT experienced the same issue. There was a service bulletin out for the X3 that called for a replacement gearbox.
