Problem after SMG DIY Mod

Hi everyone, first of all can I say what an excellent site... I have been looking around the site and got some amazing ideas on modding my recently purchased 2000 X5 4.4i Sport . (Two weeks ago)

I deceided to start with the SMG paddleshift retrofit.. With the help of this site I managed to get it all put together today.. amazing mod really does transform the interior of the car.

After putting everything back together and testing the paddles do work, I deceided to take the car for a drive. using the paddles I took of in 1st gear then to 2nd gear then to 3rd and back down the gears to 1st (having to stop) I then went back up the gears 2nd to 3rd (once traffic started moving) and then the car just lost power no acceleration must have travelled about 200 meters in total. The interior lights came on and I managed to roll the car to the side of the road at this point I tried to restart the car... but nothing... Everything works central locking, unlock/lock, lights, lighter, however 4:3 monitor does not come on, no radio, no cd's, no sat nav, No electric windows... and most importantly no ignition... What is going on . Checked all the fuses nothing out of place. However car still does not start when i turn the key I get nothing does not even crank the engine. The clocks stay off does not come up with anything.

I am 99% sure the SMG fit has got nothing to do with it but it was the last thing I did and the car was driving perfect before that. An electrician has suggested that the main body computer may have gone he mentioned Zik computer???????? but then he does not understand why the central locking still works.. i have been told also to get a new ignition switch..

All this has happened in the space of the last six hours (3 hours on waiting for the RAC (recovery service)).

Any help or advise would be greatly welcomed

Wow, that sucks.
I doubt its the paddle shift install. Could you have a loose ignition or transponder harness when you did the install?

Welcome! Did you disconnect the battery for the install? If you didn't, perhaps you drained it while you were working. If you did, perhaps you didn't reconnect it tightly enough... GL!

First thing I'm thinking is the transmission is still in a gear, which is why the car will not allow you to start.

I doubt its the SMG! I have had mine installed a while and its all perfect. My cousin has his installed for the past year now. NO Problems and I'm sure there are a few others on here that would agree.

Thanks for all the replies... managed to get it sorted.

Somehow I managed to blow 2 5amp fuses (somthing to do with the 4.3 monitor) and a 50amp littelfuse partnumber 8365901 (something to do with the ignition.. the electrician could not figure out what blew these fuses??????? I think X5jay and jpm 4.81s might be right and I may not have reconnected the battery correctly...

I am positive it had nothing to do with the Steering wheel mod!!!

Works a treat fingers crossed

I got the SMG steering wheel from ebay $590 (£301.37) delivered to the UK from USA
CD-Rom Cable £3.99 from PC World
Slip Ring £71.00 from Dealers (did not use as my X5 already had the required part installed, so should get a refund from dealers)
2 x cable ties
Insulation tape
extra wire (HDD wire from old computer)

Total cost £305.36

Without this forum would not have had a clue on how to acheive the mod

Thanks
