Peeling steering wheel on 4.8is

Gang,
The plastic part of my steering wheel on my 4.8is is peeling (again). The dealer replaced it once, and said they wouldn't again. I have a strong feeling it's from the wife's nails or rings.

Has anybody modified theirs (painted) to a more durable finish? If so, I'd love to see a pic. Or is there an aftermarket alternative in the black wood trim in the rest of the vehicle?

I could paint it sapphire black, but I'm not sure how that would look.

Thanks!

That is not the same steering wheel as the stock 4.8is - and yes, I had the same thing happen, dealer replaced it without even asking me, they just did it! yay good dealership!
i'm sure BMW will replace them if you all ask.

It's a common problem on the X5, not limited only to the 4.8i. Some dealers replace them under warranty and some refuse to. I have the same problem and will be talking to my dealer soon.

What do you mean by PEELING. I kinda rubbed off the black finish next to the audio control buttons. Having blue inside trim I thought of maybe trying to paint it to match. Can it be done?

Count my wife's 4.8 in as well. Not so much peeling(yet) but more like a couple of nicks revealing whitish/gray plastic on the spokes. Mayhaps from fingernails/jewelry.

I was hoping for updated part that is more durable. Not sure I'd care for the steering wheel spokes to be matching wood or even carbon fibre.

On the brightside, the finish seems to be much more durable that the rubber-coated Apple Newton looking stuff on my E46.

jobaker4 - what were you referring to as not the stock 4.8 steering wheel?
