Read it carefully, not sure what year yours is but the newer ones require BMW Longlife 1 compatible oil and I cannot at the moment think of a 5W-50 that is easy to find in Canada and meets that spec. I could be wrong but just make sure you grab the right one - in particular if you are on warranty. Once you have the quality rating figured out, your manual will tell you the right weight, I use 0W40 Mobil 1 Euro Formula year round and would not go heavier even if there were an alternative.

So far i've been using Castrol Syntec 5w-30, but lately it was burning bit more oil than usual. Then I spoke to a sales rep at Lordco, an he told me that I could use 5w-40, or ven 5w-50 (CastrolSyntec). My manual says 5w-30 or 5w-40, so I'm thinking now about 5w-50, but I wanted to cosult we somebody first. Oh, my X is '02 3.0.
