Question Can an X5 be Towed behind an RV?

Hello All,

I'm new to this informative forum.

I'd like to know if an X5 can be towed (all wheels down) behind a Motorhome without damaging the X5 transmission?

Might there be a difference between towing an X5 3.0i with a manual 5 speed vs. the automatic transmission?

Thanks for your responses in advance.

Cheers,

Marcus

Here's the 2006 list from Motorhome Magazine for vehicles sold in America that can be flat-towed behind a motorhome based on manufacturer approvals. No BMW models are present on the list so the answer is no.

I've always heard that AWD can't be towed if the wheels are touching the ground.

From the x5 manual:

If you X5 is a auto then it can not be towed behind your RV all four wheels on the ground the front has to be lifted up.

Yes the X5 uses X-Drive which is a continuous AWD system.

You can't tow a AWD vehicle with only 2 wheels on the ground because the transfer case and transmission require all 4 having resistance. I'm not sure if you could tow a AWD vehicle with all 4 wheels on the ground It certainly would not be the preferred method.

I've seen many Jeep 4x4's towed with all 4 wheels on the ground. I asked someone about this a few years ago and that was one of the reasons he got a jeep because he could do this without issue. He mentioned that you couldn't do it with others. I never questioned him about why jeep and nobody else, but I do believe he was giving his honest thought based on his research. I'm sure any dealer could give you an answer in a hot second.

I guess those Jeeps have a switch where you can turn FWD on or off. AWD is better system.
