Strange noises getting worse on my 4.4 X5

I have a 2004 4.4i and i have problems with weird noises since it waqs new and they are getting worse.

First noise is a wierd whinning noise coming from the engine at partial throttle or when you totally let go of the throttle. you cant hear it when you excelerate more than half throttle. From inside the vehichle it sounds like it is coming from near the firewall. Also it does not do it in nuetral only when driving but it does not sound like the driveline i am almost positive it is coming from the engine.

Second noise. When backing up and turning the wheels near lock it makes a loud clunking noise that sounds like it is coming from somewhere near the front wheels. And also makes this noise if it is thrown into a corner at high speed and you are really pushing it.

I have brought it to the dealer several times for both problems and they first said they cantr duplicate it and know they say they heard it and looked over the entire X5 and could not find anything wrong or anything that would cause it to be dangerous to drive. So they said unless a recall or tsb is sent out about it they are not going to do anything about it.

I think it is Bullsh*t and I am worried something may give way while i am driving. and May cause me to lose control. and besides that i just spent 65K on the X5 and dont think a vehichle with that price tag should have these problems.

IS ANYONE OUT THERE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND IF SO CAN YOU HELP ME. BMW NA SUCKS BIG TIME.

Please help.
Thanks

I've got a 2005 4.4 and hear the whine also. It only does it when my car is using a little stress to power itself foreward. Generally, I only hear it above 60MPH while cruising.

I let off the gas and coast and it goes away. I rev the engine in idle and I cannot hear it. I plan to take it to the dealer this week to have them drive it.

I think it's a tranny whine. I bought the car in January and I started hearing this sound in May. I'll keep you posted.

Chris

I just sarted getting a whistling noise from the windshield too today. What the hell is going on here. Ive owned many BMWs in the past and the X5 definately has the worst build quality and reliability out of all of them. I cant believe how many problems i am having.

I have a 2005 4.4 and get the whistling noise too and I have narrowed it down to the fan (heating/cooling) being on in the vehicle. I can hear the whistling noise even when the AC is off, but the fan is still on. I told my dealer about this and I was told that it was the condenser, which I disagree with as I can still hear the whistling even when the AC is off (i.e. snow flake button is off).

Has anybody got this fixed?

I have read other threads which state that it might be the intake adjuster, do you think I am having the same problem?

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

as here are no replays to this post, I bump it. I have the same problem as X5_Rules - the whinning noise when my heater fan is on, especially after hard driving. the noise dissappear just after I turn the heater off completely... How it could be related ? please advise...

Hmm.. not sure bout the whining noise.. But about the clunking, have you checked the CV boots?

But for the whining noise, I think I read about a similar issue in a different thread and it turned out to be a crack in a part of the plastic intake tube. So maybe check that out? Goodluck.

I think I have the whining noise as well after driving for a while. I notice it when I'm pulling into the garage then I turn off the fan and the sound goes away. If I turn it on again the noise will come for 5 seconds or so and go away.

i took it in to get serviced...and they changed the rear differential...
