Buy a Battery Tender, hook it to the connections under the hood: no overcharing, no more dead battery. http://www.batterytender.com/ GL,mD

Thanks for the information. I'll give it a try and be more confident now.

it usually take a few minutes after you hook up the jump. especially if your battery bad enough to warrant replacement.

Front lugs worked just fine for me when I drained my battery with the headlights on while trying to program my garage door openers! I put it on a trickle charge overnight and the X started just fine in the a.m. A trip to Autozone for a replacement battery with an 8 year warranty = $119.00 US. Very easy replacment and I don't need to worry about it not starting!

First thing you should be asking yourself is how old is the battery? If original, it's time for a new one (I replace every 5 years, rather than waiting for it to give out at an inopportune time) Winter usually finishes off weak, old batteries. My 2001 X5 was a 12/00 build. So when I bought it used 7/01, I replaced the battery before winter set in. Just one of those normal (any) car maintenance things.

ive had to jump mine a few times the last few years as i dont get to drive it all that frequently during the winter (upper midwest). last week i connected to my girlfriends 328is through the front and it fired up after about a minute. this while being so dead my dome light was out AND at an outside temp of -5. battery is 2 years old. maybe you have a loose connection somewhere? |

It really is a good idea to turn everything off before turning off the ignition - the X5 is a power hog with all the sensors and OBC - others have mentioned draining their battery by listening to the radio while washing the car (something I always used to do with my American cars without fear of battery drainage) - I also hook up the BMW trickle charger if the X5 won't be driven for the next week (or longer)
