At 25 below I would suspect the crankcase breather. Typically you would see oil around the engine when you raised the hood, but possibly not, depending on how it froze up.

There are valve covers on the right and the left. Maybe it could be this Engine Breather Valve that tends to freeze up in frigid temps... Like today!!!!

Ok, update from the dealer.... I guess my problem is the oil seperator. It cracked and oil was not draining back into the engine? I also need new valve covers.... Does anybody know how much valve covers to replace cost? I have extended warranty but you know how cheap these guy's are, just in case they don't want to change the valve covers, how much do they cost??? Just in parts, the labor is 120 per hr.... Thanks....

Our X is at Motorwerks right now for the same reason. Right after the superbowl, got a burning smell. Opened the hood to find oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold (left side of the engine). It looked like oil was coming from where the o2 sensor plugs into the manifold, which I know is absurd.
X5 got towed to the dealer yesterday morning. They just got to looking at it this afternoon because of the 20 other BMWs towed in yesterday. I highly suspect the oil seperator and/or breather. Last edited by vinuneuro; 02-06-2007 at 07:35 PM.

Hello, small world.. Well its at patrick in Schaumburg. I was told it doesn't let the oil go back into the engine and it puts pressure onto the valve covers so this is why plus the leaking oil goes right onto the manifold and makes this awful smell and smoke.... It seems to be common with X5 and this same type of engine...

You said valve covers, is yours a V8? Ours has the I6. The breather issue is common with this engine. I was surprised hear the oil seperator issue since it was an issue with previous gen BMW engines as well.

I know, the guy at bmw said it is not very common. I guess I'm the lucky one.... I do have the V8... 4.4i sport package. He said that the below zero temps can cause this problem....
