Ours had a valve cover gasket leak as well as a result. The service advisor said this is probably what saved our engine. There was another X5 there with the oil separator problem. His gasket did not fail, so the accumulated moisture ended up hydrolocking the engine. Needless to say, his bottom-end is fubar.

im wondering how you guys are getting raped this bad. my X5 is at the dealer because of the separator issue. fortunately we have extended warranty. other stuff is going to be done and charged to the warranty company.

oil separator + valve cover gasket + power steering line + right control arm= $700 parts/labor

WTF only $700, Before they even looked at mine, the service advisor said an oil seprator is about $1500 parts/labor to fix, but he also said "since i get all my service done there he is going to check if they will cover half of the cost." How nice of them huh?

Does all this oil separator problems only happened in cold weather?

From reading several years of posts on this recurring problem,
my guess is that the hydrocarbon laden moist air that collects
in the crankcase vapor exit system, tends to freeze and/or
'harden' in cold temps. It appears to be exacerbated by those
cold temps, as the reported incidents occur in cold weather, not
"summer".

Lack of real longer term world cold weather testing combined with
cheap azz, low cost oem parts=plugged arteries and real problems.
