CV Boot Replacement

My front left CV boot ripped on my 2002 X5 spilling grease all over my rims. I did the temporally duct tape patch job which is hold so far. I have reviewed the online instructions for replacing the boot which looks to be a pin in the butt for just a little $18.00 part. So has anyone on this list replaced the boot yourselves or did you suck it up and spend the $$$$$ at a shop or dealer to fix it.

Some of our finest members on this board did it but this is no easy job.

Changing the boot itself is simple, but if you need a new CV joint too, you're much better off going to the dealer or a mechanic.

I would not say changing the boot is easy Vin. It is not. It requires quite a bit of work.

You might be right. I recalled The Cleaner saying that it was..maybe not.

It's a pain in the butt and needs some special tools that most don't own. It takes a while to do and if you are not doing it every day expect it to take longer.

I replaced my cv boot with the help from others here in the forum. You should check out Hayaku's write up which has a ton of pics and input on this prodject. Special thx as well go out to Abarth, and the Cleaner.

How come they don't come up a splitted CV boot any more? With the technology & High tech RTV. It can easyily be done. It will be nite & day for installation.
