Exclamation X5 Problems - at what mileage?

Hey everyone,

I am new on this forum and I am thinking of buying an early X5 (2000-2001), likely with 70K+ miles on it.

I am wondering at what mileage you guys have started to have issues with your X5?

I am no newbie to BMWs, having owned an E46 (3 series), so be as technical as you like..

Thanks!

Tranny's seem to go bust between 100,000 -> 120,000?

There is also that window issue...

Someone will mention the CV Joint boot issue which seems to occur 70-100k. X5 owners should elaborate on this.........

I figured the auto trannys would have this issue... I think I'll be looking for an automatic regardless... I don't think it's too logical to buy an SUV (SAV) with a manual gear box...

I have an '01, w/56K+ and it runs very well. I have, however,
treated it well since new, 90% of the miles are easy highway
miles and I've never beat on it...

I'd rec'd a model year or two, newer and, less miles.

Your question, to be answered more than anecdotally,
would require pages of responses, but like mine above,
they are just snippets of how ours/mine "runs".

I suspect most here would rec'd a newer version and less
miles.

Do some reading vs the Search Function for problems: most
of us have seen or read the usual.

50,001 miles.

:p

OK, only kidding. I'm at 71,5xx miles and still rolling along. I'm worried about the aforementioned 100k-mile tranny issue.

How much would something like that cost? Fixing or replacement of the tranny?

Sounds like what I went through last week. I have 137,xxx miles on my 2001 X5 3.0i and the prognosis was not good. Ended up there was something wrong with the auto tranny internally (probably worn out clutch pack or something) and basically have to replace it with a remanufactured BMW Automatic tranny. Dealer will quote you something like $6-7K to replace, parts & labor, but you do get a 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty on the tranny job at any BMW dealer. I did call around to see if anyone would rebuild it and the quotes were from $3.5-$4K but the mechanic stated that it probably wouldn't be as good as the remanufactured one from BMW. My X5 should be done by the end of the week.

Anyhow, have it checked out....your problem may be a simple one because the 2001 X5 4.4i did have a technical service bulletin on the "Park-Neutral safety switch" going bad and if that goes bad, it will put the auto tranny in failsafe mode (either leaves you in 4th or 5th gear--a limp home mode). Maybe all you need is that switch and not a new tranny. But, sounds like you need to get it checked out!

Good luck.
