Extended Warranty: Is it worth it? How many have had problems between 50K-100K

The title pretty much says it all. I am wondering if its worth it to get the extended warranty. I hope I can still get it as I was not the original owner and bought it used with only 15K miles on it.
I can just imagine the cost of fixing something if it goes bad, ouch!
TIA.

I have a 2001 X5 with about 73K miles, and so far the only problems I've had since being out of warranty are control arms (common issue), window regulator (common issue), and a front wheel speed sensor. In total I think I've had about $400 in out of pocket repairs, which I don't think is too bad.

Now the mods and toys for my X5, on the other hand, haven't been as kind to the wallet

You don't have to be the original owner to buy the extended warranty or the extended maintenance. You just have to be under the mileage and number of years limit.

rdatta: An open ended question w/ lil'info to go on and give an opin:
how long are you Really going to keep it? How many miles per year are you going to drive it? What year is it? Etc.

Ext Warr's are simply insurance policies: if you buy one you are betting that the $2Gs +/- cost will be less than what you spend on potential repairs in the ext. warr. time frame.

Some posters here have been lucky/fortunate and have had v.few probs. Others have had more than their fair share.

These are expensive beasts if something serious goes wrong, but then, nothing may go wrong.

BMW NA offers an Ext Warr for 2 yrs/50K miles for $2800, which may be negotiable, but is pricey, imo. See link from Great Info Directory on Main Page of X5 World Site:

http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/B0...ranty+Plan.pdf

Or, other legit companies, eg WarrantyDirect, One Source, et al, offer 5-7 yr/100K warranties for $2ish Gs. Give a lil' read and pick your armor. GL,md

EDIT: Before someone leaps on my back, I re-read the "2OP" aka Orig. Owner Protection Program and it's basically CPO in coverage, but Only for orig. owner.

I suspect the aftermkt co.'s, eg WarrDirect, et al, are the way to go. I'm gonna get some kinda coverage if I'm keeping this beast when orig Warr is gonzo in Sept.

David, its my wife's SAV. I gave it to her on Mother's day as a gift for givng my 2nd beautiful baby girl. I am very anal about maintainence but she on the other hand just likes to turn the key and drive it.
I plan to do a 2nd oil change between every scheduled oil change so you get the idea. We plan to keep the SAV for atleast 100K at which point depending on BMW's new model, we might trade it in/sell it or keep it. For now, we are extremely pleased with it but as you know these things can start looking dated when a new one comes out.
My biggest concern is auto transmission. They are not exactly BMW's strong suit. Every mechanic I have ever trusted tells me the issues with BMW auto transmissions. The sloshboxes are bullet proof and I personally had transmission problems in my 540 auto. It just stopped moving one day and I donated it to charity.
I know the transmission can run over $8k and don't ever plan to pay for one out of my pocket. Even with the X5, I am not too impressed with the shifting. Its quite jerky. The X5 only has 16K on it right now so I know it is just the design.
Sorry for ranting for so long but I have been burnt before so I rather plan this one ahead if I can.
Thanks again.
Raj

Raj: I'm sorta confused: you list it as an '04 X5, so you have some serious Time left on both Free Maint and Warranty, whether you bought it used from a priv.party, Stlr or used car stlr.

There is Zero reason or benefit to extending the Warr from Anyone, at this time.

Enjoy this board: it's The Best X5 board and maybe TheBestCar&Stuff board, on the web....come back and talk about your Ext Warranty needs in a few years, lol!
