So the rear fog lights is suppose to be on the drivers side? So in the US which is left hand drive, the rear fog light should be on the left side of the car. Can anyone verify this?

But IIRC, only one of the rear foglights should light up. That's the way I've seen it in most European cars and cars in the US that have the rear foglight on. It might be asymmetrical on purpose so people don't think they're regular brake lights.

i think it really does vary with each car company. for example, audis have one in the back, but volvos have two...

i think there is an industry standard for left or right, but i don't think it was designed for both to be used at the same time since that can be easily mistaken for brake lights. each car company may vary within itself depending on which country the car is released for. i just don't remember for the US if it was left (drivers side) or right side.

I don't believe that there is any requirement for it to be only one rear foglight. The manufacturers that use only one can alternate the rear fog light with the reversing light, which is clear, one on each side. That way they don't need a new cluster. Although you need a rear fog light in many countries, it doesn't specify that you need two and this is the cheap way of accomplishing it.

I think it is far more effective to have two rear fog lights.

My Saab's is on the left hand side only. (Driver's). I use it only when it's pretty foggy or pouring rain.

My friend has an 02 Audi A6 which lights up on both sides ... my 99 E class only lights up on the left side ...
I'm in the middle of modding my US spec E39 here in Taiwan to have rear fogs. I installed new CELIS taillights, which already have the wiring and bulbs for the rear fogs, and also installed the new cluster switch. The new taillights came with a new LCM, which took care of that issue. Now all I need to do is run the wire from the new fog light switch to the LCM and I should have them working and both sides will light up

I just returned from my local dealership trying to order the necessary parts to do this project. I couldn't get the Euro dual fog light switch. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this please?! thanks in advance.

UK Construction & Use regulations require that one rear foglight is fitted to the drivers side rear. Manufacturers can if they wish add one on the other side. The VW Group normally fit just one - with some exceptions, but if the light clusters are identical then the wiring and bulbholder is frequently in place for two. I simply drilled and cut the plastic at the back of the lenses and inserted a second bulb into the bulb carrier on the the passenger side on my Skoda's, and hey presto - two rear foglights. My brother's A3 was the same.

UK X5's have two rear fogs but that is BMW's choice - and a sensible one in my view.
