ATTN: Black carpet East Coast X5 owners.

How in the hell am I going to get the white residue left in the carpet from these past few weeks of snow/salt we have here in Pittsburgh.

I have the WINTER matts but somehow my big feet some how get stuff on the outside of the matt around the edge of the matts..

Any luck? This is the first time I have had my X5 in the winter as I bought it last spring.. My 525i has tan carpet so i dont really have those issue although i dont drive it in the winter..

Here's what I've always done (I live in upstate NY). I go to bed, bath, and beyond (don't laungh) and purchase their large lback plush bath mats and put them over the standard mats -- they soak up an amzing amount of liquid and also keep your pants from getting salt on them... Just throw them in the washing machine when they get dirty and they come out good as new...

Right now I have the usual crusty stain. The BMW mats don't do a very good job of protecting the carpet.

I've cleaned many carpets with great success, salt, grease, food, you name it. Any carpet cleaner with lots of water and a scrub brush works well. Use a shop vacuum to remove excess moisture when your done.

Tomaz: I don't mean to be difficult about it, but northern road salt stains in carpet are a special case. Do you have any experience actually cleaning that horrible result of dried slush out. I ask because Califirnia is unlikely to experience the "stuff" we get in the north east.

Hi John, You're not difficult. I spent 25 years in Connecticut. Try a little of any type of detergent and hot water on a test stain. One of my hobbies is detailing cars. The stain is essentially salt which will dissolve. Let me know if it works. Tom

Thanks for the follow-up. I'll keep trying. I am really disappointed in the BMW mats, as they seem to have let a lot of slush through compared to other vehicles I have had in the past (and this was a mild low snow winter too). The kind of mess I found under the mats is a shame.

John
